Randolph Fired Overnight All I can say is WOW. Everyone except Jerry Manual who took over the team was let go. The decision to fire everyone was done in the middle of the night. Talk about shocking. With a payroll of $138M, the Mets couldn't get it going and following what took place after last year, this shouldn't be shocking but you would figure the guy out in Seattle would have been the 1st to go after the GM was fired the day before. I guess we should appreciate the loyalty the Braves have shown Bobby after not making the playoffs the last two years. We have struggled, questioned the decision making of BC but at least BC isn't managing under the microscope of the NY media. Maybe the media and fans should be calling for Minaya's head too, he is the one who has put this $138M team together and they haven't performed. |

Not really that surprising, but they should've waited until their next homestand. I think it was very classless of the management to fire Willie after the 1st game of a West Coast road trip in the middle of the night.

I agree Abws, to do it in the middle of the night was classless but they did it by email too. It seems at about 3:14 am, they sent an email informing everyone except Manual that they were fired. I truly thought McLaren would have been the 1st to go or even Ozzie Guillen after the comments he had made a few weeks ago. Makes you wonder if McLaren is the next one to go. |

A day or so. The Mets are supposed to have a news conference at 5:00 on ESPNews. You can bet ESPN will have it also. Even the Mets fans are not happy with how the Mets handled this mess. Yeah, they were calling for Willie's head on a platter but the manner in which the upper brass handled it is what has the fans ticked off. To send an email to tell someone they are fired, that is a coward's way of doing business. Be a man, make a phone call and tell them over the phone, they don't have a job. |

Willie's Account of the Firing. Willie just telling everyone how Minaya reassures him one moment then turns around and fires him. The way Minaya did, stammering and beating around the bush, what a piece of work, how hard is it to say, "Your services are no long welcomed, you are fired." Then to beat it, here is a copy of your contract, review it with your agent, if you violate it, you won't get the money that you are due. Someone needs to remind Minaya, he is the one who was given card blanche to go out and get players then turned around and gave them those big contracts, they haven't delivered what they were supposed to delivered, a World Series to NY. For the owners of this team to say Minaya had the final say, is passing the buck. You own the team Wilpon step up and fire Minaya because he is spending your money and not producing a winner on the field. |

Personally speaking..while it was horribly bungled by Omar and the management (Jeff Wilpon called for the firings, I'd bet anything), Willie had to be canned. On the good side, the fire is seemingly back from the mets. With Willie gone, the yankee-like restrictions are gone and they seem to be playing a lot looser under Manuel. I don't know if it's related or not, but they've won 3 of 4 and are back at 500. While I can't say the end justifies the means, in this case..like I've been saying since last year, Willie going away may be the best thing for the mets. Edited by Whitekean04, Jun 21 2008, 09:52 AM.

Willie was fired in LA, 90 minutes after the Mets-Angels game. The East Coast time is irrelevant to the story, except to the fact that the media got scooped (and the media HATES it when they get scooped on a story). The NY papers couldn't write about it til the next day, and I guess they got a little chaffed. Anyway, Manuel was informed that night, and Oberkfell and the new Coaching staff was flown in from NOLA. I can agree that the firings were bungled...badly. But the class (or lack of) isn't a huge deal here. Omar's timeline does make sense, even if his mindset doesn't. Either way, his arse is on the line now....and everyone knows it. |

Good to hear from ya Whitekean and a Mets perspective. I guess we can sit and bash the way things we handled from an outside view but to hear it from a Mets fan's view opens the eyes a little bit. I did read that Minaya's butt is on the line now. |
